"Let's replace Long Live Leninism with Long Live Stalinism!" -Lazar Kaganovich: The Beginning of Stalinist Propaganda
Essentially, Joseph Stalin worked to convince the Russian people that he was an idealist working for change. He told them he was "infallible," very similarly to how Squealer from Animal Farm told the animals that Napoleon could do no wrong and everything he said was in the right. Joseph Stalin is a parallel to Napoleon; and they used propaganda in much the same way. The use of propaganda by the pigs of Animal Farm and the revolutionaries of Russia helped both to gain and maintain power. Lenin, a communist of Russia, who was responsible for starting the communist revolution, is very similar to Old Major. He gained much of his power by the use of propaganda, especially his slogan, "Peace, Land, Bread," which promised those three things: the end of the Russo-Japanese War, the people's farms back, and the end of food shortages. This slogan caught fire in Russia, which led to the growing support of Lenin's regime. The animals also had a slogan, tenaciously chanted by the sheep, "Two legs good, four legs bad." This shows the change of ideals from Lenin to Stalin and from four legs being bad to four legs being better than two. In this way, Stalin also gained power using propaganda. Stalin used propaganda in almost all aspects of his reign, from the mid-1920's until his death in 1953. He used posters, art, books, and cults to promote himself and his rule.
These are some examples of the posters of Stalin-era Russia. It is clearly shown that he is a kind man, always smiling, who loves children and his
Russian comrades. During his reign, everyone saw these every day and had them ingrained in their minds. The people became incredibly loyal to Stalin because of them. These are very similar to the green flag that the pigs had erected on the farm that had a hoof and a horn featured on it, promoting animalism.

In Animal Farm, after Snowflake was chased out of the farm, Napoleon started to blame everything that went wrong on the farm on Snowflake, logical or not. Leon Trotsky, once a friend of the State, like Snowflake, was exiled from Russia by Stalin, and similar anti-enemy propaganda was used against him. Lies were told about him and became accepted, such as that he had not joined the Communist party until after the October Revolution, even though he was one of the key figures of the revolution. In the same way, Napoleon declared that Snowflake had not even helped the animals in the Battle of the Cowshed, even though he was the reason they won the battle. Stalin also used anti-German and anti-Fascism propaganda, such as declaring on a broadcast that Germany waged war to exterminate the Russian people. In much the same way, the pigs on Animal Farm said that all humans wanted to kill them, and the neighboring Foxwood and Pinchfield farms were plotting against the animals. Propaganda is one of the methods that Joseph Stalin used to gain power, and then keep it once he had his grasp.
